The formal and communicative aspects of design are covered through readings, projects, in-class assignments, online assignments, and discussions. Credits: 3 (2 lecture, 2 lab) Prerequisites: None Co-requisites: None Student Learning Outcomes As a result of meeting the requirements in this course, students will be able to: 1. Develop critical thinking, problem-seeking, and problem-solving skills. ○ Means of Assessment: Design projects and critiques. 2. Engage in research necessary for the design process. ○ Means of Assessment: Research assignments and presentations. 3. Demonstrate craftsmanship and professionalism in their work. ○ Means of Assessment: Evaluation of project execution and presentation. 4. Analyze the cultural context of design. ○ Means of Assessment: Written reflections and discussions. 5. Establish good studio practices. ○ Means of Assessment: Participation and adherence to class procedures. Course Content This course covers key topics such as: ● Study of formal elements and principles of design. ● Use of design principles to support communication of concept, content, and subject matter. ● Study of color theory. ● Solving visual problems using design principles and color. ● Thinking, writing, and speaking about visual work critically and fluently. Teaching Methodologies ● Lectures, discussions, and visual presentations using smart classroom technologies. ● Individual and group critiques. ● One-on-one tutorials and studio work with students. Course Texts and/or Other Study Materials Required Textbook: Launching the Imagination: A Guide to Two-Dimensional Design (4th Edition) by Mary Stewart, McGraw Hill. ISBN: 978-0-07-737981-0 Required Materials: Students must bring the following supplies to class: ● Sketchbook ● Sharpies (extra-fine and fine point) ● Pencils (soft, medium, hard) ● Ruler (12” or 24”) ● X-acto knife and extra blades ● Bristol board pad (14”x17” or 16”x20”) ● Triangle (plastic) ● Black ink ● Erasers (white plastic, pink pearl, kneaded, gum) ● Adhesives (UHU glue stick or rubber cement—rubber cement not used in class due to odor) ● Acrylic paints (cadmium red medium, alizarin crimson, ultramarine blue, cadmium yellow medium, black, titanium white, burnt sienna, burnt umber) ● Paintbrushes (round and flat, various sizes) ● Portfolio (optional) ● Tackle box or container for supplies (optional) Grading Policy Grades are determined as follows: ● 60% Design projects, discussions, critiques, and quizzes. ● 20% Meeting deadlines. ● 20% Attendance and participation. Project Grading Scale: ● A (Excellent): Exceeds expectations with superior craftsmanship, concept, and execution. ● B (Good): Meets expectations with good effort, thought, and care. ● C (Average): Barely meets expectations with minimal understanding. ● D (Below Average): Does not meet expectations with little effort or understanding. ● F (Fail): Student does not complete assignments or attend class. Attendance Policy BCC Attendance Policy: Students are expected to attend every scheduled class meeting. Attendance and lateness policies are determined by the instructor and will be outlined in the course syllabus. Attendance will be monitored for administrative and counseling purposes.
