Course Description:
This course continues the studio practice introduced in ART-127 in which students explore and
develop technical and aesthetic considerations in painting. The thread of study is twofold:
a.traditional, academic study in oil painting
b. contemporary painting experimentation and exploration in oil and/or other media.
As in ART-127, student painting may include portraiture/life model, still life, interiors/exteriors,
landscapes, and/or nonobjectivework.
Credits: 3
Hours Allocation: 3 hours of lecture/studio work, with an expectation of at least 6 hours of
independent work weekly outside the classroom.

Student Learning Outcomes:
As a result of meeting the requirements of this course, students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate technical competencies in painting, including control of value, temperature,
and color.
○ Means of Assessment: Individual projects and critiques.
2. Analyze and apply principles of design and composition in their paintings.
○ Means of Assessment: Graded studio assignments and discussions.
3. Develop personal artistic style and expression through creative projects.
○ Means of Assessment: Final project and reviews.
4. Engage in meaningful critiques by articulating the strengths and weaknesses of artwork.
○ Means of Assessment: Group critiques and participation.
5. Research and discuss traditional and contemporary painting practices.
○ Means of Assessment: Presentations and class discussions.
Course Content:
● Exploration of materials, techniques, and approaches to painting.
● Academic study focusing on spatial relationships, structure, value, composition, and
color.
● Creation of works addressing portraiture, still life, landscapes, and non-objective subject
matter.
● Presentation and analysis of works by historical and contemporary artists through videos
and supplemental materials.
● Participation in group critiques and demonstrations.

○ Traditional Oil Paints or Water-Soluble Oil Paints (Student’s choice).
● Estimated cost of materials: $206 - $369 depending on selections. Additional supplies
may be needed during the semester.
Research, Writing, and/or Examination Requirements:
Students are required to:
● Complete and present paintings for mid-term and final reviews.
● Actively participate in critiques, demonstrating the ability to analyze and discuss artistic
works.
● Submit projects that reflect an understanding of technical and creative concepts.
Grading Policy:
Grades will reflect the following components:
● Assignments: 50%
● Mid-Term Review: 15%
● Final Review: 15%
● Participation in Discussions, Critiques, and Attendance: 20%
Grade Scale:
A = 100-90%, B+ = 89-85%, B = 84-81%, C+ = 80-75%, C = 74-70%, D = 69-60%, F = Below
60%.
Participation is measured by:
● Active engagement in class activities and discussions.
● Timely submission of assignments.
● Maintaining a clean and organized workspace.
Attendance Policy:
Attendance is crucial for success in this studio course. Students are expected to:
● Attend every class punctually.
● Notify the instructor in advance of absences.
Policy on Absences: Three unexcused absences will result in a full-letter grade reduction.
Arriving late or leaving early will count as half an absence. Excessive absences may result in
course failure.
Late work will be accepted at the instructor ’s discretion.
