Develop conceptual thinking to guide design decisions. Means of Assessment: Portfolio assignments and critiques. 2. Demonstrate advanced skills in using design software and creating professional compositions. Means of Assessment: Project submissions. 3. Reflect upon and evaluate personal work and the work of others using design principles. Means of Assessment: Peer critiques and presentations. 4. Prepare professional design pieces for student portfolios. Means of Assessment: Final portfolio review. 5. Manage time effectively to meet project deadlines. Means of Assessment: Timely submission of assignments. Course Content This course emphasizes the following: Advanced techniques in editorial and promotional design. Conceptual development for graphic solutions. Integration of type, image, and color. Professional presentation and portfolio preparation. Course Texts and Other Study Materials Required Texts: None Recommended Texts: Instructor will recommend several books and outside resources via the class website. Supplies: Blank sketchbook for note-taking and brainstorming Large white drawing paper pad (9”x12” or 11”x14”) Folder for handouts Felt tip pens, markers, pencils, Staedtler white plastic eraser 2 flash drives (one master, one backup) Metal ruler with cork back Self-healing cutting mat X-Acto knife and #11 blades White artist’s tape Adhesive of choice (e.g., spray mount, rubber cement, double-sided tape) Supply Resources: Dick Blick: 65 State Route 4 West, Paramus, NJ 07652 Michael’s: 259 N. Franklin Tpke, Ramsey, NJ Online vendors: dickblick.com, utrecht.com Research, Writing, and Examination Requirements Students will complete a series of design projects, including but not limited to: Poster design Book jacket design Branding project Website and app design All assignments will include project briefs, incremental submissions, and final critiques. Grading Policy Evaluation Criteria: Design assignments (process steps and final projects): 75% Attendance: 10% Class/online discussions and participation: 15% Late Assignment Policy: Assignments are due at the beginning of class on the specified date. Late submissions will result in a grade reduction of one full letter grade per week. Work not completed within two classes of the due date will not be accepted without supporting documentation for extenuating circumstances. Grading Scale: Score Letter Grade 90-100 A (Outstanding) 87-89 B+ (Very Good) 80-86 B (Good) 77-79 C+ (Slightly Above Average) 67-76 C (Average) 60-66 D <60 F Attendance Policy Attendance is mandatory and vital to success in this course. In-class activities, demos, and critiques provide the basis for future work and cannot be replicated. The attendance policy is as follows: Three or more absences will result in a full letter grade reduction. Four or more absences will result in course failure. Two tardies will count as one absence; tardiness exceeding 20 minutes will count as an absence. Class cancellations will be announced on the class website and via email.
