Technical and aesthetic issues in masking, key framing, interlacing, and compression are explored. Students learn to incorporate illustrations, photographs, video, and audio into their animations, progressing from storyboard to completion. For students familiar with 3D animation techniques explored in ART-192 and/or ART-293, the possibilities for incorporating 3D animations into their projects are presented. ● Credits: 4 (2 lecture, 2 laboratory) ● Prerequisite: ART-290 Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) As a result of meeting the requirements in this course, students will be able to: 1. Master the tools, interface, and digital animation capabilities of industry-standard software. 2. Identify key components of digital animation production. 3. Critically evaluate (aesthetically and technically) their own work and the work of others. 4. Propose, design, and create advanced animation on the computer. Means of Assessment: ● Graded art projects demonstrating specified skills. ● Evaluations through critiques and presentations. Course Content The course includes lectures, demonstrations, studio time, and critiques (both one-on-one and group). Major Topics Covered: ● Storyboarding ● Animatics ● Group Projects ● Cut-Out Animation ● Puppet Animation ● Timeline Curve Editing Course Texts and/or Other Study Materials ● Students must bring portable disk drives to each class session to save and back up coursework. ● Bergen Community College is not responsible for student work left on workstations. Research, Writing, and/or Examination Requirement(s) ● Projects demonstrating technical and creative proficiency. ● Group and individual critiques. Grading Policy Grades are primarily based on class projects, with evaluations as follows: ● A: Demonstrates originality, technical mastery, diligence, and commitment to animation. ● B: Fully completed, technically competent, with solid design decisions. ● C: Completed but demonstrates weak technique, lacking creativity or cohesiveness. ● D: Partially completed or does not meet assignment requirements. ● F: Not submitted or fails to engage with course material. Attendance Policy All students are expected to attend every scheduled course meeting. Attendance and lateness policies will be established in writing by the instructor for the course section. Attendance records will be kept for administrative and counseling purposes.
