The course covers traditional academic oil painting techniques, including structure, spatial relationships, value, composition, color, and texture, while also encouraging contemporary exploration with oil and other media. The subject matter includes portraiture, still-life, interiors, landscapes, and non-objective painting. Credits: 3 (2 lecture, 2 lab) Pre-requisites: None Co-requisites: None Student Learning Outcomes By the end of the course, students will be able to: 1. Demonstrate technical competencies in oil painting techniques. 2. Apply principles of design, composition, and color theory in their artwork. 3. Develop a unique personal style and artistic expression. 4. Analyze and critique works of art using appropriate terminology. 5. Experiment with various painting media, including texture and layering techniques. Means of Assessment: ● Portfolio evaluations ● In-class critiques ● Written analysis of paintings ● Practical assignments Course Content ● Introduction to painting materials and techniques ● Value, temperature, and color relationships ● Composition and spatial organization ● Exploration of traditional and contemporary painting styles ● Group and individual critiques Course Texts and Study Materials Required: ● Hawthorne on Painting, Dover Publications, Inc., NY, 1960 ● The Oil Painting Book, by Bill Creevy, Watson-Guptill Publications, NY, 1994 Grading Policy ● 40% Portfolio #1: Academic Study ● 40% Portfolio #2: Personal Exploration ● 20% Attendance and participation Attendance Policy Students are expected to attend all classes. More than one absence may affect the final grade. Being late or leaving early may also impact grading. Other Policies ● Plagiarism & Academic Integrity: Copying from other artists without proper acknowledgment is strictly prohibited. ● Use of Technology: Smart classroom tools may be used for lectures and critiques.
