Course Description
Official Catalog Course Description:
This course teaches the basic principles of digital image processing and manipulation, including
image acquisition, editing, color correction, channels, special effects, and transformation
techniques. Emphasis is placed on methods used to create, retouch, alter, and output
bit-mapped graphics.
● Credits: 4 (2 lecture, 2 laboratory)
● Prerequisite: None
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
As a result of meeting the requirements in this course, students will be able to:
1. Use the tools, interface, and digital imaging capabilities of industry-standard digital
imaging software.
2. Identify key components of bitmapped graphics production.
3. Critically evaluate (aesthetically and technically) their own work and the work of others.
4. Propose, design, and create graphic and photographic images on the computer.
Means of Assessment:
● Graded art projects demonstrating specified skills.
● Evaluations through critiques and presentations.
Course Content
The course includes lectures, demonstrations, studio time, and critiques (both one-on-one and
group).
Major Topics Covered:
● The Basics of the Bitmap: pixel dimensions, resolutions, color depth, file size, and file
formats
● Compositing Bitmaps: selection, masking, layers
● Touchup and Effects: brushes and filter effects
● Image Color and Tonal Adjustments: levels, curves, and info
● Type and Paths
● Acquisition: digital cameras and scanners
● Output: print graphics, web graphics, and multimedia/video graphics
Course Texts and/or Other Study Materials
● Students must bring portable disk drives to each class session to save and back up
coursework.
● Bergen Community College is not responsible for student work left on workstations.

● Projects demonstrating technical and creative proficiency.
● Group and individual critiques.
Grading Policy
Grades are primarily based on class projects, with evaluations as follows:
● A: Demonstrates originality, technical mastery, diligence, and commitment to digital
imaging.
● B: Fully completed, technically competent, with solid design decisions.
● C: Completed but demonstrates weak technique, lacking creativity or cohesiveness.
● D: Partially completed or does not meet assignment requirements.
● F: Not submitted or fails to engage with course material.
Attendance Policy
All students are expected to attend every scheduled course meeting. Attendance and lateness
policies will be established in writing by the instructor for the course section. Attendance records
will be kept for administrative and counseling purposes.
