Commercial Practices used in the Cultivation of Cannabis Species
This course explores the controlled atmosphere production facilities, such
as greenhouse and growth chambers, for medical cannabis, and field pro-
duction of industrial hemp. The environmental, biological, chemical, and
cultural practices used in cannabis cultivation are discussed and demon-
strated under greenhouse and field conditions. Student projects and
hands-on research are a significant portion of the laboratory sessions.
Prerequisites: HRT101 Plant Science and HRT232 Plant Propagation or per-
mission of the instructor

Hours per week: 4, 2 hours lecture and 2 hours lab

Required Text: Marijuana Horticulture: The Indoor-Outdoor Medical Grower’s
Bible; Jorge Cervantes
Required Laboratory Manual: None; all materials will be provided in print or as
online links.
Supplementary Materials: You will need to provide: a class binder for handouts
and notes, estimate 2/5”-3.0” binder, part of which will be a lab notebook section.
Student Learning Outcomes:
1. GAIN AN UNDERSTANDING OF PLANT CULTURE IN GENERAL
AND A SPECIFIC UNDERSTANDING OF THE ROLE THAT THE CANNABIS
PLANT HAS IN TODAY’S SOCIETY.
2. UNDERSTAND THE TERMS AND TECHNOLOGIES USED IN ALL
ASPECTS OF THE GROWING, HARVESTING AND PROCESSING OF COM-
MERCIAL CANNABINOID PRODUCTS.
3. RESEARCH PERSONS AND ORGANIZATIONS THAT HAVE A
PROVEN RECORD OF ACCOMPLISHMENT IN BOTH THE MEDICAL AND IN-
DUSTRIAL USES OF CANNABIS SPECIES.
4. EXPLORE PERSONAL ETHICS RELATIVE TO CLINICAL USES
OF MEDICAL MARIJUANA.
5. DESCRIBE THE HUMAN PHYSIOLOGY OF MEDICAL
MARIJUANA USE.
6. IDENTIFY THE CULTURAL NEEDS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF
MEDICAL AND INDUSTRIAL CANNABIS SPECIES.
7. RESEARCH RECENT SCHOLARLY PUBLICATIONS ON THE
MEDICINAL AND INDUSTRIAL USES OF CANNABIS SPECIES.
8. INTERACT WITH POTENTIAL EMPLOYERS AND SURVEY A
VARIETY OF EMPLOYMENT OPTIONS.
STUDENTS WISHING TO CONTINUE A STUDY IN PLANT SCIENCES AND
MEDICINAL PLANTS MAY CHOOSE TO CONTINUE WITH COURSES IN THE
BIOLOGY/HORTICULTURE PROGRAM.
NOTE: ENTRY LEVEL EMPLOYMENT IN THIS FIELD INVOLVES A VARIETY
OF CAREER PATHS. JOBS IN THIS INDUSTRY INCLUDE: PRODUCTION
OF A PLANT, PROCESSING OF THE ACTIVE PLANT INGREDIENTS, PROD-
UCT DEVELOPMENT, HUMAN WELFARE AND ECONOMIC SUSTAINABILITY
AS WELL AS MARKETING AND SALES.
Assessment Tools:
The above student learning objectives will be assessed or evaluated by instruc-
tors using a variety of assessment instruments including lecture exams, labora-
tory exams, quizzes, laboratory reports, written reports, presentations, pro-
jects, etc.
The final grade in this course will be based on:
