COURSE TITLE: DHY 216 -HY
Community Oral Health II
1 credit – 30 hours
PREREQUISITES: DHY-202, DHY-204, DHY -205, DHY-206,
DHY-207, DHY-219
TERM: SPRING SEMESTER
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This partially online course will provide students with an opportunity to engage in
practicum designed community oral health experiences related to health
promotion, community outreach and interdisciplinary opportunities over the
course of the semester and apply the principles learned in Community Oral
Health I to the practicum experiences.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of the DHY- 216 course the student will be able to:
1. Identify career opportunities in the public health sector available to dental
hygienists.
2. Discuss the Healthy People 2020 initiative and identify four oral health
objectives included in the initiative.
3. Identify, compare and discuss oral health programs at the national, state
and local levels.
4. Identify, compare, and analyze community-based oral health initiatives.

5. Identify agencies at the local, county, state and national levels that
influence access, delivery and of oral health services.
6. Analyze the impact of health literacy and cultural competence in the
design of community oral health initiatives.
7. Utilize health promotion, health communication and health marketing
strategies to develop a practicum proposal.
8. Develop an interdisciplinary oral health initiative.
9. Develop an oral health promotion initiative.
10. Develop a community oral health outreach initiative.
Core Competencies

C2 Adhere to state and federal laws, recommendations and regulations in the
provision of dental hygiene care.
C3 Provide dental hygiene care to promote patient health and wellness using
critical thinking and problem solving in the provision of evidenced – based
practice.

accepted scientific theories and research as well as the accepted standard
of care.
C5 Advance the profession through service activities and affiliations with
professional organizations.
C6 Communicate effectively with individuals and groups from diverse
populations both verbally and in writing.
C7 Provide accurate, consistent and complete documentation for assessment,
diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation of dental hygiene
services.
C8 Provide care to all patients using an individualized approach that is
humane, empathetic, and caring.

Health Promotion and Disease Prevention
HP1 Promote the values of oral and general health and wellness to the public
and organizations within and outside the profession.
HP2 Respect the goals, values, beliefs, and preferences of patients while
promoting optimal oral and general health.
HP3 Refer patients who may have a physiologic, psychological, and/or social
problem for a comprehensive evaluation.
HP4 Identify individual and population risk factors and develop strategies that
promote health related quality of life.
HP5 Evaluate factors that can be used to promote patient adherence to
disease prevention and/or health maintenance strategies.
HP6 Evaluate and utilize methods to ensure the health and safety of the
patient and the dental hygienist in the delivery of dental hygiene.
Community
CM1 Assess the oral health needs of the community and the quality of
resources and services.
CM 2 Provide screening, referral, and educational services that allow clients to
access the resources of the health care system
CM3 Provide community oral health services in a variety of settings.
CM4 Facilitate access to oral health services by influencing individuals and
organizations for the provision of oral health care.
CM6 Evaluate the outcomes of community-based programs and plan for future
activities.
