Course Description
This course will enable the student to provide quality patient care while demonstrating the application of
technical skills needed to perform ultrasound procedures. Medical term definitions will also be presented
and practical applications of medical terminology will be covered. An understanding of pertinent
emergency care, patient psychology, medical ethics and management skills will be presented.
2 Credits: 2 Lecture Hours
Prerequisites: DMS-101; DMS-113; DMS-115
Student Learning Outcomes: As a result of meeting the requirements in this course, students will be
able to:
1. Define standard medical abbreviations currently used in routine laboratory reports in patient care,
surgical reports, and in communication.
2. Discuss the role of ultrasound and the sonographer as part of the health care team.
3. Explain how sonographers can make ethical and legal decisions within the scope of practice.
4. Demonstrate an ability to spell, pronounce, and recognize medical vocabulary and its components;
i.e. roots, combining forms, prefixes, and suffixes.
5. Implement the skills and knowledge necessary to care for patients during ultrasound exams.
Means of Assessment: Students will be assessed in the following methods:
Midterm and final examinations, quizzes, lab preparations and assignments
Course Content
This course will enable the student to provide quality patient care while demonstrating the application of

Grading Policy
Short Writing Assignments Following a disabilities lab, the student will describe how the experience will
inform their role as a healthcare provider.
Final Grade Calculation: Final grades will be calculated as follows:
Quiz average (4) 25% Midterm exam 25%
Labs 25% Final exam 25%
Grade Scale: All grades are absolute and will NOT be rounded off.
A 92% – 100% C+ 79% – 82.9%
B+ 88% – 91.9% C 75% – 78.9%
B 83% – 87.9% F 0% – 74.9%
