Course Description
This course covers basic principles and elements of fashion design with a focus on line, color, form,
space, and texture. Basic body types and sketching techniques are emphasized. Students will apply
the knowledge learned in Life Drawing 1 and Introduction to Fashion Systems to create fashion sketch
presentations. Students will learn basic fashion proportions; develop a library of fashion croquis, basic
rendering techniques for various fabrics and textures, flat technical sketching skills and presentat ion
techniques.
2 lecture hours, 2 laboratory hours, 3 credits

Student Learning Objectives: As a result of meeting the requirements in this course, students will be able
to:
1. Draft the basic human figure from reference, life or memory; dress the figure.
2. Develop a library of fashion croquis to utilize for future projects.
3. Sketch and identify various garments, seams and construction methods (including necklines, collars,
sleeves, skirts, pants, silhouettes).
4. Draw two dimensional technically correct flat sketches showing all construction details

coordinated collections.

Students will be tested on the information and skills learned in each unit of study.

Students will be given assignments related to fashion sketching and presentation skills learned in the
course.

Students will keep a sketchbook journal that categorizes their design ideas and inspiration.
Final Project & Presentation
Students will develop an eight-look collection that documents their design process from inspiration, initial
thumbnail sketch, rendering eight looks on fashion croquis, and drawing technically correct flats of each
garment. The presentation layout will be executed in photoshop and mounted onto a presentation board
using techniques learned in class.
Course Content
1. Live model drawing- gesture drawing, movement, faces, hair, hands and feet details.
2. Rendering- light and shadow, rendering different fabrics and textures.
3. Subject areas: In class drawing sessions: homework assignments, reference figures, hand
presentation techniques, digital presentation techniques, digital rendering of different fabrics.

All students are expected to attend punctually every scheduled meeting of each course in which they are
registered. Attendance and lateness policies and sanctions are to be determined by the instructor for each
section of each course. These will be established in writing on the individual course outline. Attendance will
be kept by the instructor for administrative and counseling purposes.
FAB Attendance Policy
Class participation and in-class work are key to succeeding in fashion apparel design. Three or more
absences will result in a full letter grade drop for this course. Six or more absences will result in an
automatic failing grade. For classes that meet once a week six or more absences will result in a failing
grade.

garments out onto the croquis figures we developed in class.
Draw onto tracing paper first. Bring into class for corrections
by week 8. Then redraw corrected croquis onto marker paper.
Lecture: Photoshop presentation skills for fashion. Scanning
and cleaning up your sketches in photo shop. Creating an
inspiration board in photo shop.
Test- Croquis Analysis
Homework- complete inspiration board, scan and clean up
