Course Descriptions Irish II offers students an opportunity to enhance their reading, writing, speaking, and comprehension skills of Irish, one of the Gaelic languages, through active class use of vocabulary, grammar, and syntax. The class is geared towards the development of the students’ ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing in the target language. Pre-requisite: Irish I or equivalent placement. Course Goals: Upon completion of the course, students will be able to conduct conversations, write cohesive paragraphs, and pronounce correctly in Irish using different verb tenses and appropriate vocabulary. In addition, students will develop an informed appreciation of the culture of the Irish-speaking areas of Ireland. Course Objectives: Students will be able to: • sustain short conversations in familiar topics with the teacher, peers, and native language speakers using the present, the present habitual, the present and habitual progressive, the past, and the future tenses. • write original sentences, paragraphs, and guided compositions on a variety of everyday situations using correct grammar, syntax, and spelling. • demonstrate comprehension of reading passages by responding to content specific questions. • comprehend simple conversations about most survival needs and limited social conventions. • compare and contrast cultural differences between the culture of Irish-speaking people and the American culture.
