Students are expected to attend every scheduled class meeting on time and for the full class
period. Early departure from class will count as an absent.
Class attendance and punctuality are extremely important: you need to be in class to benefit
from class discussions and activities, and because your instructor has to assess your language
use in every class. No more than three absences—excused or not—will be allowed during the
semester. Two percentage points will be automatically deducted from your final average after
the third absence.
If you are absent, you are still responsible for any announcements made or any assignments
given for the next class. It is your responsibility to contact a classmate and get whatever
information you missed.
Absences are counted from the first day of the semester. Chronic lateness to class will also
reduce your grade. Three tardy equal one absence.
MMaakkeeuupp wwoorrkk
Will be permitted only when the instructor is presented with acceptable documentation.
Legitimate excused absences include the following: participation in a scheduled activity of an
official BCC organization, verifiable confining illness, serious verifiable family emergencies,
subpoenas, jury duty, and military service. Documentation for excused absences must be
presented as soon as possible. No documentation will be accepted after the last day of regularly
scheduled classes. Only assignments missed due to an excused absence may be made up and
for no later than the next class.

others in the classroom; and anyone who is not registered in this class. In order to minimize distractions
in the classroom, all cell phones and electronic devices must be turned off and remain out of sight for
the duration of the class period. Students who take out any devices during class will lose points toward
their participation grade. If, due to special circumstances, you need to use an electronic device during
class, please consult with your instructor in advance.

you are absent on the day a quiz is given, that will be the grade you will drop. If you miss
another quiz, you must present a valid excuse in order to make it up. Can't e-mail a quiz.

There will be two exams throughout the semester—a mid-term and a non-cumulative final exam and will
be given only on the dates indicated on the syllabus. These exams will test a variety of information and
skills, namely, listening comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, culture, reading, and writing. No make-ups
will be given except in the case of an emergency, and then, only if written documentation is provided. (If
you are ill, be sure to get a note from your doctor. Saying that you don't feel well is not a valid excuse.)
Your instructor has the right to determine what constitutes an emergency and whether or not your
documentation is adequate. Exams are not curved. Failure to take an exam without a valid excuse is the
