COURSE DESCRIPTION:
LAN 116, Chinese (Mandarin) I is an introduction to the pronunciation, basic
comprehension, and communication of Chinese through active class use of simple
vocabulary, grammar and syntax. 3 lectures, l lab, 3 credits. General Education Course.
STUDENT LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Upon completion of the course requirements, students will be able to:
1. Understand the basic structure of the Chinese language;
2. Pronounce “Pin-Yin”(the phonetic symbols of Chinese) accurately with four
tones;
3. Conduct simple conversations in Chinese by using learned patterns;
4. Communicate (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) accurately and
appropriately in simple Chinese;
5. Comprehend approximately 350 Chinese characters;
6. Get familiar with the Chinese culture and society;
7. Develop a foundation for further study of the Chinese language.
ASSESSMENT METHODS:
Students will be assessed on the four skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The
assessment measures are:
1. Listening: participation in class drills, class discussions, oral communication
with instructor and classmates;
2. Speaking: conversations in Chinese with classmates and instructor;
3. Reading: ability to read text, essays, and other assigned reading materials;

4. Writing: ability to write simple Chinese phrases, use appropriate sentence
structure and vocabulary, and express one’s ideas in weekly journal entries,
short essays, quizzes, and exams;
5. Ability to write email messages in Chinese;
6. Comprehension and description of a situation: Use of audio CD’s, videos, film,
and pair/group performances;
7. Ability to define, develop, and explain student’s area(s) of interest in Chinese:
Completion of a final presentation. This project will include a written proposal,
an oral presentation to the class, and subsequent class discussion involving the
entire class;
8. Ability to compare and contrast cultures: Participation in classroom
discussions and participate in Chinese Club activities, Asian History and
Heritage Week, Diversity week, and World Week.

PREPARATION EXPECTATIONS:
1. Each lesson should be prepared in advance;
2. Preview and listen to the audio of the assigned chapter before coming to class;
3. Class attendance is required;
4. Weekly quizzes may include vocabulary usage, character recognition, and/or
reading comprehension;
5. No make-ups will be given on weekly quizzes.
GRADING:
The final grade will be determined by a student’s overall mastery of the Chinese
language as evidenced on exams, quizzes, oral presentations, homework
assignments, and class participation:
o Weekly quizzes or drills 15%
o Midterm exam 20%
o Final comprehensive exam 20%
o Final presentation, including proposal,
oral presentation, and discussion 15%
o Homework, including workbook exercises
short essays, and weekly journal 15%

Grade Scale:
A 90-100% C+ 76-79% F 0-59%
B+ 86-89% C 70-75%
B 80-85% D 60-69
BERGEN COMMUNITY COLLEGE ATTENDANCE POLICY:
All students are expected to attend punctually every scheduled meeting of each course in
which they are registered. Attendance and lateness policies and sanctions are to be
determined by the instructor for each section of each course. These will be established in
writing on the individual course outline. Attendance will be kept by the instructor for
administrative and counseling purposes.
ATTENDANCE POLICY IN THIS COURSE:
The study of a foreign-language necessitates that students attend classes regularly in
order to achieve proficiency. Therefore, students are expected to attend and actively
participate in every scheduled class meeting. Attendance will be taken at the beginning
of each class session. Each student is responsible for all material presented. If a student
is absent from a class, he/she is responsible for obtaining materials missed, information
on assignments, etc. by contacting the instructor or a classmate.
Late homework, essays, and journals will be accepted no later than one class from the
original due date and will be given half-credit.
Quizzes will be given weekly, mostly at the beginning of the class. No extra time will be
given for the quiz to those students who are later for the class. There will be no make-up
quiz and students will receive zero points for any missed quiz. However, students will be
permitted to drop their lowest quiz grade. Make-up exams will be given only in
emergency cases and official emergency documents are required.
WORLD LANGUAGES AND CULTURES
PLACEMENT POLICY:
Students interested in study a world language at Bergen Community College may choose
to either begin a new one or continue the language studied previously. Students who
have studied a world language in high school and have received a grade B or better
should enroll in the appropriate Bergen course as follows:

The Sidney Silverman Library
The Sidney Silverman Library is an integral part of the college’s educational programs.
To support the curriculum, the library acquires, organizes, and provides access to a
variety print, media, and electronic resources for individual and classroom use. It is open
whenever classes are in session and on a reduced schedule when classes are not in
