HomeMy WebLinkAboutVET-215Bergen Community College Veterinary Technology Program Course Syllabus Course Title: Vertebrate Anatomy & Physiology II Course Number: VET-215 Credits: 3 Lecture Hours: 3 Laboratory Hours: 2 Prerequisites: VET-115 Cours e De s cription: This course focuses on the basic structures and func t ions of ve rtebrate organ systems that primarily emphasize those of mamma lia n species. Among the topics addressed are the integume nta ry, cardiovascular, immune/lympha t ic, respiratory, gastrointes t ina l, reproduc tive, urina ry/e xcret or y, endocrine , and immune systems. Student Learning Objectives: Upon completio n of this course, the student will be able to:  Identify the parts of the following anatomical systems and state their functio ns : Cardiovascular; Digestive; Respiratory; Lymphatic; Excretory, Urinary; Endocrine; Reproductive of male and female; and Integumentary  List the majo r functions of blood  Identify the components of a typical ECG tracin g Means of Assessment: The student learning outcomes will be assessed using a variety of assessment instruments including written exams, demonstration of laboratory skills, quizzes, laboratory reports, written reports, oral presentations, projects, etc. Cours e Content:  To enable the stud ent to lo cate, id entify, and compare the var ious body tissue s and organs of dogs, cats, rabbits, ruminants, ho rses, birds and reptile s  To teach the student the ways in which organs and body systems functio n and interact  To provid e the student with an understand ing of the comparative differences in the dige stive tracts of various domestic animals  To instruct the student in the features and funct ions of the male and female reproductive tract  To introduce the student to the differe nces between exocrine and endocrine glands, and the funct ions of each Cours e M ate rials : Prima ry :  Colville & Bassert: Clinical Anatomy & Physiology for Veterinary Technicians, 3rd edition, St. Louis, Missouri, 2016; Elsevier  Colville & Bassert: Clinical Anatomy & Physiology Laboratory Manual for Veterinary Technicians, St. Louis, Missouri, 2016; Elsevier Teaching M e thodo logies: The scheduled topics are covered by a serie s of le ctures combine d with laboratory practicums and demonstrat io ns. Models and comparative anatomy skeletons will be utilized, as well as dissectio n of cat cadavers, for teaching purposes. Additiona l ly, the viewing of videotapes and computerized soft ware programs may be incorporated. Lecture Testing and Gra ding Criteria: Consists of: 10 unit quizzes (30%) 1 comprehens ive final exam (20%) Exams and Gradin g: All tests consist only of obje ctive mult iple-choice type, matching, and fill-in questions. All of the work you will complete in this course will be an individual effort. Exams are administered online and are “closed book” which means you should not be using any resources during the exam.
