The values promoted within sport will be examined along with common ethical dilemmas faced by those involved in sport. The course covers topics ranging from fair play to sportsmanship to current ethical issues. 3 lectures, 3 credits No prerequisites Student Learning Outcomes: As a result of meeting the requirements in this course, students will be able to: 1. Describe the purpose of ethics in the world of sport and the nuance between morality and ethics 2. Analyze how ethics effect professional, college, and youth sports 3. Identify and describe current ethical dilemmas facing sports and how they impact society Student Learning Outcomes and Means of Assessment Student Learning Objectives Suggested Means of Assessment Describe the purpose of ethics in the world of sport and the nuance between morality and ethics Students will be required to perform a case study on an ethical sports issue and analyze the difference between its morality and ethics. Analyze how ethics effect professional, college, and youth sports Students will demonstrate knowledge of different ethical issues facing professional, college and 2 youth sports in the form of written examinations. Identify and describe current ethical dilemmas facing sports and how they impact society Students will give a presentation showcasing an ethical issue facing sports today. 1.The student will prepare a 15 minute Power Point presentation 2.The student will also submit a 5 page research paper when they give their presentation Course Content 1. The role of ethics and morality in sports, and their definition. 2. Ethics in professional sports, the role professional sports play in American culture. 3. Ethics in college sports, how sports influence higher education. 4. Ethics in youth sports, the purpose of youth sports. Special Features of the Course (if any) [to be designated by the instructor] E.g., the use of learning technologies in the course (Internet, PowerPoint, web enhancement via a parallel course website, etc.); the inclusion of technological literacy learning in the course; etc. Course Texts and/or Other Study Materials Instructors are able to select one or more of the following textbooks for use in this course: Ethics in Sports: William Morgan. Human Kinetics, 2nd Edition, 2007 Fair Play; Ethics in Sports: Robert L Simon. Westveiw Press Inc., 4th Edition, 2014 Alternative textbooks or resources can be used by individual faculty with permission of the wellness discipline textbook committee. The Faculty Senate “Policy on the Selection of Texts and Other Instructional Materials,” states that “individual faculty members and/or departments should strive to select texts, whenever possible, that are most affordable for students.” Grading Policy A student's final grade for the course is based primarily on his or her performance on the required work for the course (writing assignments, examinations, class presentations, etc.) and on his or her overall mastery of the material covered in the course. A student's class participation may also be evaluated, and the grade thereon may be used as a factor in determining the student's final grade for the course; but a class participation grade will count for no more than twenty percent (20%) of the final grade. A student's research and writing work will count at least forty percent (40%) of the final grade. Attendance Policy BCC Attendance Policy: All students are expected to attend punctually every scheduled meeting of each course in which they are registered. Attendance and lateness policies and sanctions are to be determined by the instructor for each section of each course. These will be established in writing on the individual course outline.
