This course examines how people think about, influence, and relate to others. This course examines the sociocultural contexts that influence individuals’ thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. The topics covered will include: interpersonal attraction, social perception, attitude formation and change, persuasion and social influence, prejudice and stereotyping, group interaction, aggression, and prosocial behavior. Course Content: 3 The purpose of this course is to examine social cognition, affect, and behavior. Thus, the course will include the following components: 1. A review of theories, perspectives, and methodologies of the study of social psychology. 2. A discussion of historical and current issues of social psychology. More specifically, this course will address (if not all, at least most of the) following topics: Introduction to social psychology and research methods The self Perceiving Individuals Perceiving Groups Attitudes and Attitude Change Attitudes and Behavior Norms and Behavior Norms and Conformity Interaction and Performance in Groups Attraction, Relationships, and Love Aggression and Conflict Helping and Cooperation Course Texts and/or Other Study Materials: Departmental approved text: Smith, Eliot R., Mackie, D. M., & Claypool, H. M (2014). Social Psychology (4th Edition). Psychology Press. Research, Writing, and/or Examination Requirement(s): List/describe/comment on course research/writing/presentation/examination requirements. Grading Policy: Grading Scale 4 ● A = 90-100 ● B+ = 85-89 ● B = 80-84 ● C+ = 75-79 ● C = 70-74 ● D = 60-69 ● F = 59 and below Describe/comment on the grading policy for the course (standards of evaluation; methods of evaluation; weights given to various requirements such as examinations, quizzes, projects, papers, oral presentations, class participation; faculty feedback to students on written work; etc.).
