HomeMy WebLinkAboutRAD-291 Bergen Community College Division of Health Professions Department of Radiography RAD 291 – Essential Skills for Radiographic Practice Basic Information About Course Course and Section Number: RAD 291 Locations: Laboratory HP-127 Office: HP-306 Course Description This capstone experience culminates with the professional development of entry-level radiologic technologists. The students will meet the established requirements for a competency-based education. A comprehensive overview of topics involved with becoming a registered radiologic technologist and career opportunities are provided. Students are demonstrating their abilities through guided simulations on patient care, radiologic positioning, and image acquisition. Credits – 1 CR, Laboratory [3] Prerequisites - RAD 182 Radiography Practicum I RAD 282 Radiography Practicum II RAD 283 Summer Radiography Practicum RAD 286 Radiography Practicum III RAD 289 Radiography Practicum IV Co Requisites - RAD 290 - Advanced Radiography Practicum Student Learning Objectives: As a result of meeting the requirements in this course, students will be able to: 1. Create diagnostic radiographic images under indirect supervision without assistance. 2. Perform independently in areas of successful clinical competency evaluations. 3. Apply their knowledge to solve complex radiographic procedures and problems. 4. Demonstrate the ability to safely manipulate radiographic equipment. Means of Assessment Students in this course will: 1. Complete any remaining patient care competencies including venipuncture. 2. Demonstrate their understanding of material through regular participation. 3. Demonstrate the ability to perform radiographic procedures through eligible simulations as required. 4. A comprehensive exit examination will be completed at the end of the semester prior to graduation. Course Content In this course, radiography students will continue their professional development towards obtaining an entry level radiographer position and associated licensure. Students will complete no more than 10 eligible simulated competencies towards their program requirements. Students expand their ability to critically think. Students will revisit prior material in preparation for the ARRT examination. Students will develop a professional cover letter and resume to provide potential employers post-graduation. Writing utensil and notebook for note taking Research, Writing, and/or Examination Requirement(s) Laboratory Exercises and Activities Students will participate in weekly exercises that include a variety of topics such as patient care, image production, safety, and imaging procedures. Students will discuss skills required in joining the workforce such as interviewing, career searching, and joining of professional networks/associations. Examination Students will complete an exit examination at the end of the course. This examination requires a minimum passing score of 80%. A student will not take the exit examination more than three (3) times. It will cover all content taught by the radiography program within the past two years. Attendance and lateness policies and sanctions are to be determined by the instructor for each section of each course. These will be established in writing on the individual course outline. Attendance will be kept by the instructor for administrative and counseling purposes. Attendance Policy for this Course. Absences will result in the loss of two (2) points from the final grade. Arriving late and/or leaving early will result in the loss of one (1) point from the final grade. A doctor’s note will validate an absence but does not excuse the absence.
