This course examines the fundamental principles of supply chain management, encompassing
logistics, inventory control, material handling, sustainability, and transportation. Through
engaging concepts, in-depth discussions, and targeted research projects, participants will gain a
comprehensive understanding of supply chain management and its increasing significance
within the contemporary supply chain industry.

Student Learning Outcomes:
As a result of meeting the requirements in this course, students will be able to:
1. Define the domain and core topics that comprise supply chain management.
2. Explain fundamental concepts in managing logistical operations, customer relationships,
procurement, and manufacturing.
3. Analyze the strategic role of supply chain management in supporting business objectives
and contributing to society.
4. Apply basic data analysis techniques to schedule operations and forecast inventory needs.
5. Identify and discuss key factors that influence the effectiveness and efficiency of supply
chain management.
6. Evaluate alternative decisions in warehousing, packaging, handling, and shipping to
determine optimal solutions.

Students will demonstrate their ability to define the domain and core
topics of supply chain management through a multi-part
competency-based assessment consisting of case-based analysis and
the use of a basic supply chain-related tool. Quiz and written
assignment.
2. Explain fundamental

logistical operations,
customer relationships,
procurement, and
manufacturing.
Students will demonstrate their understanding of the relationships
among operations, customers, procurement, and manufacturing
through visual relationship mapping and case study application. Quiz
and written assignment.
3. Analyze the strategic role
of supply chain management
in supporting business
objectives and contributing to
society.
Students will analyze the strategic role of supply chain management
through a strategic analysis project and key factor identification and
explanation. Quiz and case study: computer assignment.
4. Apply basic data analysis
techniques to schedule
operations and forecast
inventory needs.
Students will collect data, organize it appropriately, and create visual
representations (charts, graphs, dashboards) to identify trends and
patterns and forecasting. Quiz and written assignment.
5. Identify and discuss key
factors that influence the

of supply chain management.
Students will identify key factors affecting supply chain performance
and efficiency through a process visualization and improvement
proposal project. Quiz, written assignment, and case study.
6. Evaluate alternative

Students will evaluate operational decisions in warehousing,
packaging, handling, and shipping through software application
familiarization. Written assignment, computer software simulation
assignment.
Course Content:
1. Introduction to Supply Chain Framework
• Describe the end-to-end supply chain (plan–source–make–deliver–return).
• Differentiate supply chain vs. logistics vs. operations vs. distribution.
• Map a simple supply chain for a chosen product.
2. Procurement and Supplier Management

• Identify strategic vs. tactical vs. operational procurement activities.
• Evaluate suppliers using a weighted scorecard.
• Explain basic contract and risk terms (Incoterms, SLAs).
3. Manufacturing in a Supply Chain
• Compare production strategies (MTS, ATO, MTO) and their trade-offs.
• Apply basic scheduling/throughput concepts (bottlenecks, takt time).
• Analyze how process choice affects cost, lead time, and service.
4. Operations in a Supply Chain
• Explain the role of S&OP in aligning demand and supply.
• Analyze process flows using swimlanes or value-stream maps.
• Recommend improvements to reduce cycle time or variability.
5. Inventory Analysis in a Supply Chain (This content will be distributed into 3, 4, and

• Explain global risks (tariffs, foreign exchange(FX), lead time, culture).
• Analyze Incoterms choices and total landed cost impacts.
• Propose resilience tactics (dual sourcing, buffers, nearshoring).
9. Sustainability
• Define environmental and social key performance indicators (KPIs) (e.g., CO₂e, health
and safety (H&S), diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in sourcing).
• Assess lifecycle or packaging options for sustainability impact.
• Recommend improvements balancing cost and footprint.
10. Relationship Management
• Explain customer accommodation and service policies.
• Evaluate CRM/after-sales processes for responsiveness.
• Develop a partnership plan with supplier/customer KPIs.
11. Supply Chain Information Technology
• Describe core functions of warehouse management systems (WMS), transportation
management systems (TMS), enterprise resource planning (ERP), material

requirements planning (MRP), and customer relationship management (CRM).
• Demonstrate a basic workflow (e.g., purchase order (PO) → pick list → shipment rate).
• Appraise how data quality and integration affect decisions.
12. Performance Management
• Define supply chain KPIs (OTIF, fill rate, turns, dwell time).
• Analyze KPI data to locate gaps (Pareto, trend).
• Recommend corrective actions and track results
Exams
There are two exams: A midterm exam covering chapters 1-6, and a final exam covering
chapters 6-12.
